Car Key Replacement
Cut and program replacement keys and fobs when the original is lost or broken.
Modern car keys are small computers: transponder chips, proximity fobs, and push-to-start remotes that have to be programmed to the vehicle. Some independent technicians can cut and program many makes on site. Others may recommend a dealer for certain models. Accurate vehicle details help everyone.
When this is the right request
- All keys lost
- Key blade snapped or worn smooth
- Fob stopped working after a battery change
- Need a spare key before you are stuck
Understanding the work
Distinguish an extra key from an all-keys-lost job. The vehicle security system, key type and available programming method determine the work involved.
A replacement may need a cut blade, transponder programming and remote-function testing. Your technician confirms compatibility before you approve the service; some vehicles require a dealer or specialist.
What affects your estimate
- Vehicle year, model, key type and whether any working key remains.
- Compatible key or fob parts and the programming procedure.
- Whether the request includes an extra key or erasing lost keys where the vehicle supports it.
If the scope changes after inspection, agree on the revised work and charges before proceeding.
Practical care and prevention
- Arrange a spare while a working key is still available.
- Keep a record of the vehicle details somewhere other than inside the locked car.
- Test door entry, starting and supported remote functions before finishing the visit.
Before the visit is complete
Test the blade, starting function and each supported remote button separately. A key that opens the door may still need programming to start the vehicle; a working start button does not prove the emergency blade fits.

Questions about car key replacement
Will a replacement key work like the original?+
A properly programmed key should. Some advanced features may vary by vehicle and equipment.
Can I supply a key or fob I bought online?+
Check compatibility before buying. A matching case is not enough: electronics, blade type and programming requirements must suit the vehicle. Some used fobs cannot be reused. Give dispatch the part details and keep the packaging.
Does replacing the fob battery require a new key?+
A weak battery and a missing or damaged key are different problems. Check the manufacturer battery instructions and report whether the mechanical key, remote buttons or starting function has stopped working. Battery replacement alone does not resolve every fob fault.
Does replacing a key disable the missing one?+
Not automatically. Ask whether your vehicle supports removing lost keys from its memory and whether that work is included. Mechanical door-key access may need separate consideration.
