Rekeying
Make old keys stop working without replacing the whole lock.
Rekeying changes the internal pins of an existing lock so a new key works and every old key does not. It is the practical move after you buy a home, after a roommate or contractor leaves, or after keys go missing, and it keeps the hardware you already like.
When this is the right request
- Just moved into a home and do not know who still has keys
- A roommate, tenant, or former partner moved out
- Keys lost and you are not sure where
- You want several doors to work with one key

Understanding the work
Rekeying changes which key operates a compatible cylinder; it does not repair a warped door, strengthen a weak frame or automatically replace worn hardware.
List every entry you want controlled, including side doors and garage-to-house doors. A key working on several locks requires compatible cylinders, not simply matching finishes.
What affects your estimate
- Number and type of cylinders, including locks with cylinders on both sides.
- Compatible keyways and the number of new keys requested.
- Condition of existing hardware and whether a missing working key changes the procedure.
If the scope changes after inspection, agree on the revised work and charges before proceeding.
Practical care and prevention
- Keep a record of authorized keyholders and collect keys when access ends.
- Test each new key in every affected lock before the visit ends.
- Label spare keys discreetly; avoid attaching the property address to a key ring.
Before the visit is complete
Keep the door open while first testing the new key. Test every serviced cylinder, account for the new copies and confirm that the agreed old key no longer operates those cylinders. Unserviced doors are not changed by rekeying another lock.
How it works
Step 1: Call ASAP Locksmith USA
Speak with our team at (888) 224-9291 and tell us what locksmith service you need.
Step 2: We Dispatch a Locksmith
We dispatch a local locksmith technician to your location and confirm the estimated arrival time.
Step 3: Get Your Lock Fixed
Your technician confirms the price before work begins and completes the authorized locksmith service.
Proof of authorization
Rekeying controls who can get in, so technicians will ask you to show you own or are authorized to manage the property. Renters should usually get written permission from the landlord first.
Questions about rekeying
Rekey or replace?+
Rekey if the lock works well and you just need old keys disabled. Replace if the lock is worn, damaged, or you want a different grade or style.
Can every lock be rekeyed?+
Most pin-tumbler locks can. Some inexpensive or proprietary locks are easier to replace. The technician will tell you.
Does rekeying include every door automatically?+
No. Agree on a door-by-door list so an overlooked side entry does not retain the old key. Your technician confirms which cylinders the quote covers.
Can I keep my current handles and deadbolts?+
Often, when the hardware is serviceable and the cylinders support rekeying. Damaged or incompatible parts may require a different solution, explained before you approve it.
